The initial counseling session will be approximately 60-90 minutes. The client will be asked to sign forms related to HIPAA requirements and consent to treatment.
The session is geared towards developing a therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client. The client is encouraged to ask any questions they may have about the counseling process and the therapist's ability to assist in their personal goals.
The therapist will gather information regarding the client's background, current stressors, and related symptoms.
Together, the therapist and client will determine if they will be the best fit for the client's needs. If at any time the client or therapist feels the client may experience greater therapeutic benefits with another therapist, they will be assisted in finding the best resources and referrals for their specific needs.
It is normal and natural to feel some anxiety about attending your first counseling session. Knowing what to expect will help alleviate some of these feelings, but you may still feel nervous about meeting your therapist.
Keep in mind, you will never be forced to share anything you are not comfortable disclosing and will be allowed to work at a pace that is comfortable for you.
