What does it mean to “be healthy?” “Live a healthier life” is a really common New Year’s resolution but what does it really mean? There are probably as many answers to that question as there are people who want to be healthier. As a psychologist, I have the privilege of helping people define what being healthier means to them and what they can do to get there.
This week is Women’s Health Week and I’ve spent some time thinking about the similarities and differences I have seen when we talk about living healthier lives. Most women I work with have the same basic definition of health but there are lots of different ways to get there. Most of us know we are healthiest when we are getting enough sleep, eating nutritiously, getting appropriate amounts of exercise, and getting regular check-ups in addition to coping with all of life’s stressors.
One crucial thing that I have learned in my work helping people live the healthiest lives possible is that we are most able to develop our physical health when we have enough self-worth to believe that we are deserving of care. This is usually the first step to living a healthier life- believing that you deserve a healthier life in the first place! If you don’t believe that you deserve to take time for yourself, ask for help, or change aspects of your environment, you are not likely to do those things- and your health suffers.
I spent some time exploring the Office on Women’s Health’s website dedicated to the celebration of our health and I was struck by how many of the Ambassadors spoke about how, as women, they tend to put their own healthcare low on the priority list. I think it’s time to change that. All of us are deserving of our own care. If your sense of self-worth needs strengthening, know that just as our bodies can be strengthened, your self-worth can be strengthened. You probably have a running To-Do List, this week is a great opportunity to assess where your own health care falls on that list and make some adjustments if necessary. All of us at Pamper Your Mind would be delighted to help you on your health and wellness journey!
